Education: Mini MBA with Wits Business School – Won the Top Student Award
Karen has a diploma in Project Management, a Degree in Financial Management, and is Currently writing her final Board paper in October with the Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa for a combined Company Secretary and Governance Professional Degree.
Current Post: Director of Corporate Affairs and Resource Mobilisation with Population Services International South Africa – PSI Health Solutions – an organisation with a key focus on brining health service solutions closer to our clients.
Previous experience: Karen has a history of working with local and International agencies such as: Oxfam International, Oxfam Australia, Oxfam Canada, Great Britain and Oxfam Italia, Norwegian Church Aid Southern Africa, and Operation Smile, Wits Health Consortium amongst others in Fundraising and Business Development posts. She has worked across the following countries in Africa - South Africa, Ghana, Malawi, Lesotho, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique and has a successful story to tell of raising over R70million over an 18month period.
Skills and Expertise: Karen is skilled in Institutional Fundraising, Major Donor Partnerships, Project Management, Strategic Development, Grants and Contracts Management of grants over R50million, Monitoring, Evaluation and Emergency Response for humanitarian missions.
Karen presented at the Aids Conference on the topic: Are South African NGOs geared for Large Funding award? And was part of the team that won the poster presentation at the Aids Conference that later resulted in a GBP 1,8million award from the Elton John Foundation.
Karen has worked with the FBI and USAID in uncovering fraud in one of its projects in South Africa and was the only external member of the Foreign Organisations Systems Survey team in the US.
Probono Services: Karen has assisted fledgling CBOs and NPOs with systems development and fundraising efforts
Karen as an Activist and Advocacy Agent - freelance writer for Independent newspapers writing and publishing articles on Gender based violence and Children’s Rights.
Has often appeared on SABC Channel 404 and several radio programmes speaking about GBV and Children’s Rights issues.
Karen was part of the task team that lobbied Premier Helen Zille to set up a Children’s Commission for the Western Cape to investigate the increases in femicide and the murder and rape of children.
